NC General Statutes

Terms of Service

Effective October 15, 2026

These terms cover the website at ncstatutes.com and the MCP server at mcp.ncstatutes.com (together, "the Service"). ncstatutes is a service of SmartBump, Inc. ("we", "us"). By using the Service, directly or through an AI assistant, you agree to these terms.

In short: the Service is a free, read-only copy of North Carolina's statute text. It is not legal advice and it can be out of date, so check the official source before you rely on it. Use it fairly, and don't try to overload it.

What the Service is

The Service provides the text of the North Carolina General Statutes, mirrored from the General Assembly's website, ncleg.gov, and refreshed about once a week. It also offers tools for searching that text, tracing amendment history and comparing versions. It is free and needs no account.

Not legal advice

The Service gives you statute text and information about it. It does not give legal advice, and using it does not create an attorney-client relationship with anyone. Statutes are only part of the law: court decisions, regulations and local rules can change how a statute applies. For advice about your situation, talk to a licensed North Carolina attorney.

Accuracy and currency

The text is the codified statute book, which lags behind newly enacted law. Every response says how current it is. Bills that are still pending are not included. Annotations, case notes and editor's notes are not included either. Mirrored text can contain errors or be out of date. The official text is the one published by the North Carolina General Assembly, and it controls if the two differ.

AI assistants

When you use the Service through an AI assistant such as ChatGPT, Claude or Grok, the assistant decides when to call the Service and how to present the results. We don't control the assistant, and we aren't responsible for what it says, including any summary or interpretation of a statute. Read the statute text itself, and the source link provided with it, before relying on an answer.

Acceptable use

You may use the Service for any lawful purpose, including research, teaching and building your own tools. Please don't:

We may limit or block access that harms the Service or other users.

No warranty

The Service is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including warranties of accuracy, completeness, merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement. We don't promise that it will be available at any particular time or free of errors.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, SmartBump, Inc. is not liable for any indirect, incidental, special or consequential damages, or for any loss arising from your use of the Service or your reliance on its content. Because the Service is free, our total liability for any claim relating to it is limited to $0, except where the law does not allow that limit.

Changes to the Service and these terms

We may change, suspend or discontinue the Service at any time. If these terms change, we'll update this page and the effective date at the top. Continuing to use the Service after a change means you accept the updated terms.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of North Carolina.
